  • Course Content

    The course comprises of 5 modules which should each take 3-4 hours to complete, and must be completed in order:

    Module 1 - Understanding Safety Data Fundamentals

    This module covers the fundamentals of understanding data within a safety context. This includes common metrics, identifying data sources and types of safety data. The module goes on to cover how to read safety reports and basic data literacy.

    Module 2 - Basic Data Organisation & Interpretation

    Module 2 covers how to navigate, sort, filter and manipulate safety data in spreadsheets. It also provides advice on how to address data silos and access data across departments, and well as how to handle missing values and inconsistent data.

    Module 3 - Visual Interpretation of Safety Data

    Building on the data you’ve organised and interpreted in module 2, module 3 shows the different ways to visualise safety data in an impactful way. This includes charts and dashboards where you can represent data in real-time.

    Module 4 - Creating Basic Safety Data Visualisations

    Once you’ve grasped the different visualisations available, you’ll learn how to build them yourself. From Building simple charts and dashboards to customising visuals to better communicate safety data with different audiences.

    Module 5 - Applied Safety Data Analysis

    Taking what you’ve learned on modules 1-4, module 5 shows you how you can use data to identify and quantify workplace risks, predict the likelihood and severity of workplace hazards, use data to tell compelling stories to influence decision-making and overcome challenges to implementing data-driven approaches in your organisation.

    By the end of this Data Skills for Health and Safety course, learners will be able to:

    1. Identify and access various types of safety data sources, recognising data quality issues and applying basic validation techniques.
    2. Organise and analyse safety data using appropriate spreadsheet functions to identify trends, patterns and areas of concern, including real-time monitoring data.
    3. Interpret different types of safety visualisations and dashboards to extract meaningful insights for improving workplace safety practices.
    4. Create clear and effective data visualisations and dashboards tailored to different audiences to communicate safety information.
    5. Apply data-driven approaches to quantify risks, predict potential hazards, and evaluate the effectiveness of safety interventions.
    6. Develop and communicate data-driven safety recommendations that overcome organisational challenges and positively influence decision-making.
