NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Health & Safety Process

The City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is broken down into units, covering core health and safety topics; each unit has its own assessment criteria and you gather evidence to demonstrate you have met the criteria. You will be assigned an NVQ assessor who will guide you on what you need to do and what evidence you need. Your assessor may set you tasks to help you gather the right evidence.

Evidence must be all your own work but is typically things such as documents, video, photographs, witness statements etc. RRC provide an e-Portfolio system available 24/7 for you to upload your evidence from anywhere at a time that suits you. After you upload your evidence your assessor can view and mark it online. You will achieve your NVQ when you have covered the required number of units and your achievements have been confirmed by internal and external verifiers.

How to Apply

Entry Requirments

There are no formal entry requirements for NVQs but:

  • You need to have a good standard of English language
  • You need to be working in a role that has involvement in health and safety
  • You should be resident and work in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Which Level

Here's a simple rule of thumb to help you choose:

NVQ Certificate

If you lack any existing health and safety qualifications at this level but have some (limited) health and safety responsibility, authority and autonomy, we recommend starting here first.  You can always progress to the Diploma later.

NVQ Diploma

If you already have the NVQ certificate or equivalent qualification (like the NEBOSH certificate) and you have specific health and safety responsibilities, together with significant authority and autonomy and can influence organisational policies/procedures, we recommend this.  So, you'll typically already be a health and safety manager/advisor within a senior management team.

How to Apply

Complete the skill scan for your choice (or both, if you like) - see "Which Level" to help you choose, or contact us to discuss if you are still unsure.

Once completed, email it to us and we'll get back to you ASAP about enrolling.  We won't let you hand over any money until we're sure NVQs are right for you.

NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Health & Safety FAQs

How do I know if the NVQ Level 3 Certificate is right for me?

Before enrolling onto the NVQ Certificate you will need to complete a SkillScan. This will be approved by an NVQ assessor before you enrol onto the course to ensure your suitability.

Do I have to complete the Certificate before studying the Diploma?

If you do not already hold any health & safety qualifications, but have some health & safety responsibility, this will be the most suitable starting point. You can then study the Diploma at a later date.

Can I complete the NVQ if I am based outside of the UK?

NVQs can only be studied by those living and working in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

I don't currently work in a Health & Safety role. Can I still study the Certificate?

You need to be in a role where you can access health and safety information. You do not have to be in a health and safety role specifically providing you are able to access all information needed for your ePortfolio.
