January 2014

RRC's Conference Helps Spread HSE Awareness in Sudan
As part of its aim to achieve safer working in Sudan, RRC Training Middle East (RRCME) held a very successful two-day conference, ‘Enhancing HSE Culture for Sustainable Solutions’, in Khartoum.
A high level of audience participation, plus excellent opportunities for networking, were the order of the day at the conference, which was attended by more than 200 delegates from public and private organisations from all over Sudan, representing the many burgeoning industries, including construction, energy, mining and manufacturing.
The importance of HSE to Sudan’s government, the increasing need for local training and the damaging effects of accidents on Sudan’s economy were highlighted at the start of the conference, followed by an exploration of the HSE culture in the country and a declaration of the need to bring Sudan’s HSE law up to date and make it consistent with accepted international standards.
Hasan Alaradi, Managing Director of RRCME, did not pull any punches as he compared the state of health and safety in the Middle East and North African region with the much higher HSE standards of western nations. He explained that the failure of national legal systems to set and enforce minimum standards was one of the key reasons for the imbalance.
RRCME’s Adrian Gannon gave a thought-provoking presentation on the position of occupational health within risk management, arguing that it is not given the same priority as other elements of a business, and contrasting Sudan’s occupational health with that of the UK. The session concluded with a focus on an occupational health consultancy project RRC recently completed for a large Sudanese organization.
